ballet blog with occasional diversions

observations 8/31

Haglund was skipping down the sidewalk on his way to pickleball while listening to and conducting the Brahms Haydn Variations, one of his favorite pieces to conduct while traversing the city. Vigorously conducting music while maintaining a glassy stare is a very good way to keep the sidewalk crazies at bay. Sometimes the graybeard permanently ensconced at the W 43rd corner deli will clank the change in his cup and yell “Bring up the brass” or “I like it! I like it!” while nodding in time to the music he can’t hear. Of late, Haglund has also been conducting Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 along the Hudson River Park greenway, and on the way home — if his pickleball games went well — he will joyously finger-baton the finale of Diamonds. It’s music that must be played.

We’re dropping August over the net cord. Closing it out.

Three weeks until the ballet season opener. One week until we get the first week of casting. Instagram video hints look good. Everybody is ready. Let’s go, people!
