Skip the wrapping and ribbon

Rachel Moore's present to ABT on its 75th Anniversary is to bail out on the declining institution. Now if we could only get the same present from her mate on the artistic side.

The LA Music Center has hired ABT's CEO as its new president and CEO, replacing 65-year-old Stephen Roundtree who resigned last December after 12 years to take over the Center Theatre Group which is one of the LA Music Center's tenants. The CTG had been rumored to be the group that would be hosting Susan Stroman's Little Dancer with Tiler Peck later this year. As of December, though, it was still in the discussion phase.

Mr. Roundtree's last reported salary at the Music Center was $740,889 with benefits of $109,398. Moore's last reported salary at ABT was $291,537 with benefits of $9,117.

Good luck, L.A.

I see she gets four months to clean out her desk at ABT. Do you think it will take much longer than that to replace her?

I wish her a speedy exit and hope that she takes her Star Strategy with her. If you had the opportunity to watch the CFO William Taylor interview at Babson College (he works for Moore), you’ll recall how he intimated the power that the business side had over the artistic side because they had all the numbers to support the Star Strategy. He backpedaled a little bit by saying that they don’t tell the Artistic side what to do but he reiterated that they had “the numbers” to show that the Star Strategy worked and that they convey that to the artistic side. Of course, the numbers are phony-baloney, but it suggested the enormous influence that the business side of ABT had in determining what dancers we saw on stage and who didn’t get opportunities and promotions.
Moore has continually tried to grab power since she arrived at ABT. First she got herself a seat on the Board. Then she shepherded in the Star Strategy. Then she got herself renamed from Executive Director to CEO which put her on par with Kevin McKenzie and very nearly equal in salary. There were some ridiculous salary increases for her over the years – during years when ABT was fighting the union over timid increases for the dancers and in years when revenues and contributions were either down or had not recovered from very bad years.
Miss Rachel looks after herself, first and foremost.

There were also years when the dancers had to forgo their retirement contributions. I don’t know if that is still in effect.
She is an effective business woman, I suppose. Still, good riddance.

I agree, dc. She’s left behind a mess from that Star Strategy. One wonders what other problems lurk and how far into the future she signed contracts with non-company dancers to come here. Nearly 10 years of institutionalized neglect in the development of artists (dating back to when Bocca left) has hurt ABT deeply. It will take a while and a strong staff of classically-minded guides to steer the company back on course.
McKenzie’s quote in the NYT was revealing. He said, “Rachel has done some terrific work that has left us in a strong position ….” “Some” meaning some not, as well, I gather.
