observations 7/5

It is astonishing to watch Kevin McKenzie stand on stage cheering, smiling, and laughing as one supreme talent after another walks out on him because he failed to give them the opportunities and recognition that they should have had.

It’s as if he’s been anxiously and eagerly awaiting these departures, and he’s ecstatic that they’ve finally occurred. Now he (thinks he) will no longer be excoriated for not promoting these dancers who don’t quite measure up to his fantasies. He will probably sleep more soundly tonight than ever in recent years.

Probably, but he won’t sleep truly soundly until he can get rid of Stella without promoting her and without giving us the opportunity to see her dance the roles that she was destined to dance.

No way he needs Stella to dance all those many soloist roles he doesn’t feel like coaching others to dance properly.

Well, Haglund, I hope that Stella digs her heels in and refuses to leave, if only to tie the noose tighter around McKenzie’s neck.
It occurs to me that McKenzie doesn’t like couples in his company. He’s jealous and punishes the parties by not promoting them. The couples who wait to tie the knot until after they attain principal status are the only ones who make it through.

Boy, Rachel, you hit the nail on the head. McKenzie doesn’t have to spend even a minute per week on Stella in order for her to deliver peerless performances. He could throw her into an empty studio to work on her own and she would still come out on top. That kind of low-low maintenance labor is a dream for a manager, especially if it comes with a non-complaining, non-demanding personality. It’s a sad but true cliche: she’s too good for her own good.

Angelica, I think you are probably right. If a ballerina has a strong man in her life who is knowledgeable about ballet, McKenzie doesn’t welcome the competition for her allegiance. Sarah & Luis, Yuriko & Jared, Stella & Sascha are current examples. Irina & Max were another. These dancers are grownups, mature thinkers, who perhaps don’t invite McKenzie to laden them with his daddyisms.
