observations 5/9

Get Ready, San Diego.

New York City Ballet is coming your way.

The company will appear at the beautiful San Diego Civic Theatre on Saturday, October 10th as part of the La Jolla Music Society's 2015-2016 season which was just announced today in San Diego. No word yet on what works they will bring, but hopefully you'll get one or two of their biggest and best Balanchine Black & White ballets. Stay tuned.

OMG, Houston!

Houston Ballet is presenting THREE FREE performances of GISELLE at the Miller Outdoor Theatre on May 15, 16, and 17.  And there is a program bonus of Stanton Welch's Clear, too!

Note: "This is a ticketed event for the covered seating area. Free tickets are available (4 per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30am-1pm. If tickets remain at 1pm, the box office will re-open one hour before show time to distribute the remaining tickets. As always, open seating on the hill."

Being in the midst of marauding Wilis at night in an outdoor theater is one of life's greatest ballet experiences. Dont' miss this and try to go to all of the performances. And, of course, send Haglund a report.

Though we have no information about casting, we hope that Houston gets to see the miraculous Yuriko Kajiya and Jared Matthews as Giselle and Albrecht on one of those nights. Haglund saw them in Detroit in HB's Giselle and was blissed beyond belief. Here's a reminder:

Houston Ballet at Miller is invariably one of my favorite events of the summer! Alas, they never post casting online or ahead of time that I’ve been able to find. I did see on Aaron Robison’s Instagram that he’s dancing Albrecht to Karina Gonzalez’s Giselle on Saturday night (link). I’ll be going at least on Sunday, and I’m crossing my fingers for a chance to see Yuriko and Jared.

Oh, don’t I look foolish! The full casting is on HB’s website: http://houstonballet.org/Ticketing-Schedule/GiselleClear-Casting/
No Yuriko & Jared in Giselle, but they’re performing in separate casts of Clear.

    Thanks for the info, Diana.
Wow, Aaron Robison as Albrecht – is this a HB debut for him? I vividly remember him from several years ago when the Corella Ballet or Ballet Barcelona visited NYC. He was riveting on stage. Too bad that folks won’t get to see Yuriko and Jared, but nobody should pass up Aaron Robison and Karina Gonzalez. Karina was a compelling performer when she was with Tulsa Ballet; I can imagine that she is a magical Giselle now.
