In honor of Native American Heritage Month in the U.S., today’s video Doodle—created in partnership with Native American guest artists Lydia Cheshewalla, Chris Pappan, and Yatika Starr Fields— celebrates Maria Tallchief, member of the Osage Nation who was America’s first, major prima ballerina. Not only a trailblazer for Native American dancers, Tallchief is widely considered one of the country’s most influential ballerinas of all time. On this day in 2007, a bronze sculpture of Tallchief and four other Native American ballerinas was unveiled in Oklahoma at the Tulsa Historical Society in a piece titled “The Five Moons” by artist Gary Henson.

NYCB 2020/21 season details announced. Amid our fears of “PC trash” coming our way will be the occasional delight, such as a Goldberg Variations/Serenade double bill!

    Thanks, Jeannette.
I’m finding the layout on the website somewhat awkward to view from an overall perspective.
Serenade will be wonderful to see multiple times, but I hope that NYCB has used this past year to fix the costumes and remove the pee-colored stripe in the skirts. The stripes distract from every glorious moment in which they appear.
The PC trash will be just that. I hope the dancers think that all of the injuries they get from it will be worth it.

Well, Pennsylvania Ballet’s two newest digital offerings are certainly interesting – Pickett’s TILT (Glass) and Neenan’s DECO (Stravinsky). Neenan especially displayed knowledge of the classical vocabulary. Nice! I’ll have to watch Pickett’s again, as it was a very dark film…hard to discern all that was going on in front of those rocks.

The set in Pickett’s TILT was interesting but I found the choreography arbitrary and uninteresting for the most part. DECO, as you pointed out, used more actual classical vocabulary, but was still loaded with random arm/hand movements that suggested they held some dramatic importance but really weren’t anything but random.
    Such wonderful dancers, though.
