The innovation engine is firing all pistons this fall.
Haglund just got an email that the NYCB-affiliated New York Choreographic Institute is
celebrating its 10th anniversary with its first ever performance at the Miller
Theatre up at Columbia on Friday, November 5th and two performances on Saturday,
November 6th. Tickets are $25 and $40.
Choreography by Darius Barnes, Marco Goecke and Jessica
Lang will be set to original scores by alumni of The Juilliard
School. Justin Peck will present original work set to music entitled Run
Rabbit Run.
Haglund has no interest in seeing any of this and he highly
dislikes all of the so-called new music that he has forced on himself
at the New Juilliard Ensemble concerts that he has forced himself to
attend – in order to keep such an opened mind, mind you.
However
—
interesting experiment wherein Larry Keigwin, Alexei Ratmansky and Christopher
Wheeldon each will create a short dance to the same piece of
music apparently being written for the occasion by Juilliard alumnus,
Daniel Ott.
Tiler Peck, Teresa Reichlen, Sean Suozzi, Wendy Whelan, and Andrew Veyette will
be performing as will some SAB students. It's not clear if there will be other dancers as well.
to attend this: a) there's not much dance to pick from during most of November – unless you are in Cuba,
b) the idea of three choreographers independently working with the same piece of
music is intriguing, c) the #1 train going up to the Miller is iffy, d)
Haglund doesn't want to sit through angsty pretzeling to music without melodies,
e) maybe The Juilliard has produced a composer who's interested in writing music
for ballet – doubt it.
He'll have to think about this a while
longer. Anyway, here's the link at the Miller Theatre to buy tickets.
