Unless you visit the Mariinsky website, you may not have seen this picture of Ulyana Lopatkina and Danila Korsuntsev in Swan Lake. It's one of Haglund's favorite's because of the beauty of the symmetry. The line of Lopatkina's arms are not only perfect with her own legs, but the line of her left arm extends all the way into the line of the leg of the swan directly behind her while being in perfect harmony with the arms of the swan corps.
Lopatkina's extended leg, while high, doesn't crush the tutu against her body and in fact doesn't even disturb the beautiful shape of the tutu. There really should be a law against ballerinas crushing their tutus against their torsos in order to get their legs up – call it Haglund's Law. If ballerinas want to crush their own tutus, they should do it in the privacy of their own homes behind closed doors. Generally speaking, the only time that we should see a ballerina's tutu get crushed is when her partner crushes it.
