I’m deeply and irrationally sad at Tallchief’s passing. Why irrationally? Haglund, she had a wonderful life. A fabulous life. A totally realized life. Very few people do.
She did it all…muse to the greatest choreographer of the 20th century, and to one of the greatest composers…mother to a poet, grandmother…
An amazing life! Born on an Indian reservation. The mind boggles. You can’t write a story like this, you can’t make it up. But it happened and in our lifetimes.
I hope that when the new NYCB season starts they dim the lights for a minute in tribute to her, because without her, there would be no NYCB at the Koch Theater – I really believe that. No Maria, no NYCB. It was her star power that hooked people in those early years, as much as Balanchine’s genius. Without Tallchief, NYCB would have gone the way of Ballet Caravan; here today, gone in a few seasons.
I was a bit too young to have seen her dance, but she’ll always be my Sugar Plum Fairy. Every ballerina who dances that part, is carrying on Tallchief’s legacy. That part will always be hers, just as every actor who plays Hamlet is paying tribute to Burbage.

A lovely tribute, Diana. Thank you.
I never got to see her live on stage either, but had opportunities to take her classes during a few summers. The magical Firebird appeared every time she lifted her arms.
