Haglund, do you happen to know whether there’s a difference in the screen size in these two theaters or any other information that might make one a better choice than the other? I note that neither of them is showing the film in 3D, which is probably all to the good. For me, the Regal is an easier commute, but I would be willing to go crosstown if the Empire is better for any reason.

Hi Angelica. I haven’t been inside the Regal at Union Square so I can’t be of any help with a comparison. I think the one at Union Square is newer than the one on 42nd Street.

Thanks, Haglund, I’ll opt for the easier commute.

Good grief ….another “Swan Lake” ! Of course the Russians claim the choreography is by “Petipa”…we know now that that is an exaggeration , to say the least, most of it was done by Ivanov . I read an interview with Vaziev about his reconstructions of the Petipa ballets using the Stepanov notations – the point he made that it could be reconstructed .The Guggenheim Museum lecture-demonstration by D.Fullington – PNB “After Petipa” demonstration gave tantalizing glimpses of the original…as did the Sergeyev version for the Royal ballet – there is a video of Fonteyn being partnered by both Benno and Siegfried – very touching . The Burmeister is interesting and the McKenzie version….? A dancing von Rothbart …who gets more applause the the ballerina in his solo ( a magnificent Gomes performance)…a slimy green serpent ? This is more Disney than ballet….and his “choreography” is rather feeble. The Bourne version is not really a ballet…and the male swans look rather like goats. And , why no female swans ? That would be the perfect vehicle for ABTs “Import” from the Boston Ballet . The Neumeier version -“Illusions-Like Swan lake” is interesting…turning it into tortured Ludwig II`s obsession with the ballet ( The historic Ludwig was rather enamored with the opera and Wagner, but ballet is not history )…..he keeps the white acts…the concept is interesting…but the choreography of the last act is weak except for the final scene…and it is a great role for a dancer with acting skills- Stearns would be perfect for it – he even resembles the young Ludwig. I told him that last Wednesday , he replied that he does not know that ballet – even though he was magnificent in Neumeiers “Lady of the Camellias”. Wonderful designs by J. Rose.
But I ramble….it must be boring for the Russian dancers to do that ballet again, again, and again…and it shows.
But I hope that those that see the broadcast enjoy the performance..
