How sad! I remember seeing him dance in 1977 when the NYCB toured to Chicago and performed Union Jack and Midsummer’s Night Dream. His son was dancing then too. What a wonderful performance that was with Jacques D’Amboise and the greats of that time. I’m glad for the video that you posted, Haglund.

    He was a beautiful dancer.
When I was young I was obsessed with Davidsbundlertanze. I loved the ending pas de deux he danced with Farrell. I thought of it immediately.

So sad over this. He was one of the greats.
I love that version of Apollo and I wish NYCB would bring it back.

My nose fuzzed up and my eyes blurred when I read the news that he had passed. I think my first real memory of his dancing was as the Carnival Barker in the “Seascape Dream Ballet” in “Carousel”. The floating, buoyant jump, soft plushy landings combined with the whiplash speed of his menage of turns was so amazing to my young eyes…to say nothing of the deluxe partnering skills on display….sigh…..Finding out that he was with NYCB made me take a new interest in that company…this from one whose love for ABT had already sprouted and was growing like a wild garden.(Unfortunately, that particular wild garden has had some weed killer sprayed on it….) I’ll always thank him for being the one who got me to “broaden my (ballet) horizons”…..

One unexpected perk of getting old is the realization how lucky I was to see the greats when they were at their prime. NYC in the 60s and 70’s was a golden period for ballet. He was not only a great dancer, but an asset to the city school kids later on with his dancing program. I highly recommend his autobiography. He was an artist and a gentleman and gave me a wealth of joyful memories.
