Alessandra Ferri will return to the Met Opera House this June to dance Juliet opposite Herman Cornejo's Romeo? Pinch me.
Joy and enthusiasm are tempered only by the thought that somebody else might try to make a comeback, too. But let's not go there. . . .
We are thrilled. Absolutely thrilled. Something to look forward to in the spring. June 23, 2016.

That is really nice news. And yet, for me, it is tempered by the thought that one or more worthy ABT soloists waiting in the wings was denied a chance to take on this role.
But you know everyone is really more excited over the fact that Boylston, with Gorak as her Prince, will take on the opening night of Sleeping Beauty in DC. ;P

OMG, OMG! AWESOME! This will be an “R & J” for the ages!
I’m there!

There are several Juliets who need to be replaced: Herrera, Kent, Reyes. My guess is that Vishneva won’t show up for the season. She won’t like being second banana to Ferri’s comeback – not even to dance with Gomes. Hopefully, we’ve seen the last of Semionova. I’m grateful that (it appears for now) we’ve been spared Kochetkova’s Juliet. There are many openings for new Juliets from among our own dancers. Sarah Lane should be the first one cast. If she isn’t, well, it would seem that McKenzie has learned nothing from all of his mistakes.
Let’s hope none of ABT’s season is wasted on Osipova who has continued building her reputation for unreliability and unprofessionalism by bailing out on another performance last month while citing visa problems that prevented her from getting to Barcelona. Didn’t she realize that she’d already used that excuse a couple of years ago?

Haglund, as much as I loved Ferri back in the day, I agree with you. After Julie Kent’s long farewell last season, its like, umm…can’t any younger dancers get their chance? And yeah, I wonder how Diana will take this. She’s so glorious, why should she play second fiddle? Can’t quite figure out what is going on internally with ABT management to make these bizarre choices.

Hi Cindy.
Ferri and Cornejo have been very actively performing together in rigorous choreography for the past couple of years. Her performing schedule has been as busy, if not more busy, than prior to her “retirement” from ABT. She has more left in her body now than Julie Kent had 10 years ago. Given Ferri’s and Cornejo’s close relationship, we may see an utterly magnificent performance – possibly the best Romeo of Cornejo’s career.
I also think that Dvorovenko could come out of “retirement” to dance Juliet but it would only be worth it if she danced opposite Roberto Bolle. What a shame we didn’t see them again in those roles. I just hope nobody else gets any ideas about coming back.
Lastly – a few months ago, it was the end of an important era because Julie was the last Baryshnikov hire left in the company. Now Ferri, his most important hire (along with Julio), is back for a performance.
Boy I would love to see Ferri and Baryshnikov work on a theater/movement piece together at this point in their lives. She’s following the same sort of course that he has been for a while. Perhaps their paths will again cross in the next few years.

I’m very excited about this, because as a recent ballet fanatic (about 3 years now), I’ve never had the chance to see Ferri outside of a glorious YouTube Giselle video. Now I’ll get to say I’ve seen her live! Can’t wait, marked the date on my calendar. And I will definitely see Lane if KM takes his head out of his arse and casts her as Juliet.

“She has more left in her body now than Julie Kent had 10 years ago.” Well said Haglund! Ferri will not only bring her unparalleled artistry, but she will also bring the technique. This will be anything but a watered down performance. She may have retired from ABT, but she certainly never stopped dancing. Now if this could be streamed to the masses that would be a plus. Then people can see what happens when you cultivate artistry and not celebrity. No Instagram ballerinas here.

True SM.
As exciting as this is, the night might end up belonging to Cornejo.

Whether the night belongs to Cornejo or to Ferri, I think the sizzling chemistry will override all. When I saw Cornejo dance Romeo opposite Obratszova’s Juliet, I was sure that after the performance they were going to run right down to City Hall for a marriage license. I’d never seen Cornjeo so energized, so full of emotion. Ferri brings that out in him, as she did in Cheri. I hope I can get a good seat. I’m sure the performance will sell out.

Totally agree about the sizzling chemistry, Angelica.

I hope that Kevin doesn’t go a step further in his celebration of super veterans and bring Kent back one mo’ time!

You KNOW that’s exactly the plan. What a shame for ABT if it happens.
