Fall options reminder

Pennsylvania Ballet will premiere its production of Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet from October 11th through October 21st. Currently, Sterling Baca and Lillian DiPiazza are featured in the media photo on the website. Single tickets will be available later in the summer, but you can grab them by choosing a Flex-package that includes Angel Corella's new production of Giselle in March and the All-Stravinsky program in April which will feature Apollo, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, The Cage and a premiere by Matthew Neenan. (There are other possible choices for the Flex-package.)

In the neighborhood, the Hungarian State Opera and Ballet arrives at Lincoln Center in November for 14 performances of opera and ballet. The company is bringing its traditional Swan Lake, Don Quixote, and a triple bill of Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen's works which will only be performed on the last Sunday of the visit at matinee and evening performances. Van Manen, who is now 85 years old, continues as the Resident Choreographer of Dutch National Ballet.

The idea of seeing a fully staged Petipa Don Quixote in the Koch Theater is mighty appealing.

The opera offerings are  Erkel's Bánk bán (The Viceroy Bánk), Goldmark's The Queen of Sheba, Vajda's Mario and the Magician and Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle. There will be a huge gala performance on Sunday, November 4th of mostly opera excerpts although van Manen's Trois Gnossiennes is scheduled to be performed. Here are Ulyana Lopatkina and Ivan Kozlov interpreting his Trois Gnossiennes a decade ago.

Tickets are a good price, starting at $20, which makes all of the offerings worthwhile risks. Some of the side ring seats are $14 — even better.

Red costumes in the R & J studio shot seemed odd.

Yeah, odd, but the art scheme is used to promote the entire season. I doubt that Lady Deborah would sign off on that type of change. Nor do I expect to see Corella’s Giselle in a white unitard.

Thank you, Haglund, for the news of these upcoming performances. My heart sank when I saw ABT’s fall lineup. There isn’t a single evening of performances that I want to attend, no matter who is cast. On the other hand, I’ll use the money I will have saved to see the Hungarians when they come soon after. I wonder whether their Hungarian dance in Swan Lake will be different from ours. (Perhaps Siegfried will swear fidelity to the Hungarian princess.)

Thank you for the updates. Is Hungarian ballet any good? I guess it’s YouTube time. Can’t wait to take the acela to Philly to see R&J.

Anna, I don’t know anything about the Hungarian State Opera and Ballet. I know that the Budapest Festival Orchestra is always popular when it visits Lincoln Center.
The videos on YouTube hint that it might not be as well-funded as other Hungarian arts groups. When I see pointe shoes that look a little too shellacked and perhaps worn too long, it tells me that the dancers maybe aren’t working under ideal conditions. I’m sure that they are working incredibly hard to make a great first impression on their tour to NY. I’m expecting that there will be plenty in their performances to admire.
Again, let me remind everyone that right now there are some pretty good seats for $20 and $14.

Got tickets for both Swan Lake and Don Q. Given the horrendous fall programme at ABT, what is there to lose…

I’ve visited Budapest several times, due to family connections, and have seen this company in their gorgeous home theatre on Andrasy Street. They’re a good, solid company with a large, well-schooled corps. They have a number of fine principals, including an absolute gem in Lily Felmery, IMO. Not to be missed. I’ll be at their NY appearances with bells on!

Thanks, Jeannette!! You just opened my wallet for some extra performances. Picked up some opera tickets, too.

Angelica, I’m with you on ABT’s season — not a single performance I want to sit through.
With regard to the Hungarian company, it seems that they are embarking on a worldwide tour during 2018-2019 while their theater is undergoing construction.

Igor Tsvirko, the former soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet, has recently joined the Hungarian National Ballet and will appear with them on tour in NYC. I wish I could be there to see him but the dates overlap with the Mikhailovsky’s visit to Costa Mesa.

Wow, Dreamer, that would be great to see Tsvirko with the Hungarian National Ballet — although casting hasn’t been announced yet and it seems that Tsvirko continues to be listed as a leading soloist on the Bolshoi website. I’m glad that I have tickets to both Don Q performances.

The site of Hungarian Opera is not well organized but it is still possible to find the page showing DQ cast in NYC. By the way, Tsvirko will partner another Bolshoi dancer Diana Kosyreva. Here is the link:
