Julio Bocca’s Ballet Nacional Sodre premieres a brand new production of Don Quijote in Montevideo with choreography by Raúl Candal/Silvia Bazilas and designs by Hugo Millán. Our own Maria Riccetto will be making her Kitri debut on Friday, August 29th with Ciro Tamayo as Basilio.
Can you imagine having your Basilio caffeine loaded up by Julio Bocca? The impact of his high energy, beautifully executed performances will be felt for a long time to come. Wish there was a clearer video of this. By the way, Julio is holding company auditions on October 11th.
Meanwhile in Hong Kong, Nina Ananiashvili, who upon retirement from ABT gave her Kitri tutu to Maria Riccetto, is staging her own production of Don Quixote for the Hong Kong Ballet which will premiere on August 22nd. She brought along a little bit of help with her, too: Aleksei Fadeechev, former Bolshoi Ballet artistic director. Matthew Golding and Anna Tsygankova will stop by for a couple of performances, too. You'll recall that they starred in the Ratmansky production at Het Nationale Ballet.
Who will ever forget seeing Bocca and Ananiashvili together in Don Q? The Kitri in the fuller version of the above clip, Cynthia Harvey, was not too shabby either, to put it mildly, during the Baryshnikov years at ABT.

Thank you so much for update on Julio and Nina!! I still like ABT today, but everytime I watch their videos I realize how much I miss them and make me cry – I feel like an old lady. Julio and Nina and Alessandra Ferri, that was ABT’s golden age for me. I miss them terribly.

Hi, Crazy….,
I hear ya. No one has yet come close to matching the magic of Bocca and Ferri. The only pair with the potential to come halfway close (were they given more opportunities to dance) just decamped to Houston.

I hope they are reading your blog, Haglund. It might be at least some small comfort to hear you say that.
