This evening The Australian Ballet kindly published on their social media this lovely photo by Kate Longley of our favorite Giselle's arabesque penche. They say she's "divine". Yup, we know it to be true.

Hi, J and Angelica.
I love how this photo appears to be the joyful arabesque penche from Act I that foreshadows the spiritual arabesque penche from Act II that is in the picture in the post directly below this one. She is so utterly beautiful.

Maybe they will offer her a principal contract and she’ll finally get the promotion she’s deserved for years (even though we’d be sad to lose her in NY, it would be awesome to see her stick it to KM).

Hi Kaysta.
I agree with you, but McKenzie would consider it a victory if Stella left, particularly without having danced Giselle or Aurora or Odette/Odile or any of the other roles that we all know she has been destined to dance. If McKenzie were to allow Stella to dance these roles now, and she gloriously succeeded in them as we know she would, he would face criticism as to why she didn’t dance them sooner and why he inserted such hideous, unclassical dancers in those roles before her.

A dancer’s career is so brief. Abrera needs to move if she wants more roles and it seems other companies are willing to give her those roles.
I know it would be great if McKenzie would just fold and promote her. But I don’t think that will happen. Either he is at the whims of various other people who like Copeland etc. or Abrera is just a dancer he inexplicably doesn’t appreciate. We’ll never know unless people start gossiping.

Australian Ballet has a major slew of Sleeping Beauty performances coming up this year – many more than ABT could ever hope to do. Around 40 performances of Sleeping Beauty before the end of the year, many Giselles, The Dream, and some version of Cinderella (one of Ratmansky’s). The company has had major retirements. Who would be surprised if Stella and Sascha had already inked the lease on a Melbourne apartment? Not Haglund.

Breathtaking. And I especially love the fact that it isn’t 6 o’clock. Enough already. I’m tired of ballet as gymnastics.

I agree, Diana, the 6:00 arabesque is gymnastics, and isn’t nearly so beautiful as the isosceles triangle. Balletic form is based on geometry–proportions, circles, and angles. Triangles, especially, are everywhere. And leave it to our Stella to gratify us with the most beautiful arabesque of all.
