One of our favorite former ABT soloists, Jared Matthews, who this year has battled his way back to the stage after a serious illness, announced yesterday that he will be leaving Houston Ballet at the end of the season. His exact words were that he "will semi-retire." His next step is to become the Assistant to the Artistic Director of Estonian Ballet. The AD will be Houston Ballet's Linnar Looris, a native Estonian who will replace outgoing AD Thomas Edur. What an interesting turn of events.

I will miss seeing Jared dance and will always be grateful to him for giving me the incentive to start flying to Houston to see performances after he and Yuriko joined Houston Ballet. HB has a consistent high caliber of artistry and technique throughout the company that I don’t find in ABT, and I am happy to purchase tickets before casting is announced. Mayerling was phenomenal (every cast), and I will always go there to see MacMillan ballets. They will perform Mayerling again!! But I wonder what else Jared’s announcement may mean for HB…I wish him the very best.
