Maria Riccetto in The Merry Widow

Maria Riccetto debuted as The Merry Widow last night with Julio Bocca's Ballet Nacional del Sodre in Uruguay.  Our Maria is only supposed to stay in her home country a year and then return to ABT.  But now that Julio has announced that his next season will include productions of Swan Lake and Don Quixote, what would be the point of Maria returning to a deteriorating ABT where she would be forever diminished and humiliated as one of McKenzie's so-called Flagship Soloists — that group of uber talented U.S. trained principal-entitled artists who are required to kowtow to every wretched import that McKenzie drags in as his next star?

Julio Bocca's production of Don Q will, no doubt, be an international lightning producing event.  And Maria, no doubt, will be deemed a revelation – again.

Hi Haglund, Thanks for the beautiful photos. This is perhaps silly of me, and maybe I’m the only person on the planet who feels this way, but what detracts from Maria’s stage persona, for me, is too much teeth. I think she needs to ramp her smile down a notch.

Hi Silly Pants, K, and Angelica.
I’ll try to search out a review, but it may be hard to find, and of course, the translation will be courtesy of Google.
Angelica, I love Maria’s smile. Yes, lots of natural teeth, but when she smiles ear to ear, her eyes crinkle and smile so beautifully as well. But I understand how big or bad teeth can be off-putting to the audience. Osipova’s choppers are just one more aspect of her that needs to be cut back.

In my experience there has never been a female dancer who can look as glorious in the air than does Maria Riccetto. She can look more natural and relaxed (pure illusion), and beautiful in lifts than dancing a terre. Look at the photos you’ve just posted! I’ve sometimes noticed her in performance with ABT, when it seemed as though her partner was reaching up and snatching her from the air and restoring her to the ground. I think she really ought to be nurtured in the most ethereal roles. I tend to agree with Angelica about Maria’s smile. It is difficult for me to imagine Maria’s current onstage persona being a convincing Act II “Giselle”. But if Murphy has been able to fix her smile then why not Riccetto.

Thanks for the validation, Out Looking In. Why not, indeed? I would guess that no one has ever told her, as if doing so would be impolite.
