RNZB creating feature film Giselle

The tip received by the UIEX three weeks ago about a new film of Giselle by the Royal New Zealand Ballet appears to have been a good one.

An article dated tomorrow and appearing online tonight is the official announcement by The New Zealand Film Commission of a feature film of Giselle in collaboration with RNZB.  The feature film, which is being produced by Matthew Metcalfe and stars Gillian Murphy, will "capture performances, rehearsals and much more."  So we can expect Ethan Stiefel, Johan Kobborg, and the beautiful Amanda McKerrow to be featured prominently as they piece together this new production.

"Our film is an interpretation of the Royal New Zealand Ballet's
beautiful, moving production of Giselle," says [Director] Toa Fraser. "The film
will move in and out of the theatre, through time and space, to create a
truly cinematic, poetic retelling of the story".

Wow.  Gillian has gone from having no chance to dance Giselle in 16 years at McKenzie's ABT to dancing the title role in a brand new production and starring in a ballet feature film that will surely rekindle the heat under scores of Center Stage fans who as of last summer were still streaming into the Met Opera House to scream their lungs out when Stiefel and Sascha Radetsky performed on the stage together.

Maybe Stiefel will grant McKenzie a complimentary private screening and a continuous update of how much money the commercial release is making for RNZB.

RNZB's Giselle premieres next Wednesday night in Wellington.

Ahahaha. I would’ve been guilty of this if I lived in NYC and had the chance to go. Alas, I made do with YT curtain call vids and pics of Cooper, er Ethan’s last performance. I am excited for everyone at RNZB and am deeply curious what this collaboration with Kobborg will look like.

The new AD of RBNZ really puts some other AD to shame. RBNZ might think about asking Stella to dance some performances of Giselle when they take the ballet on tour. Maybe even Stella AND Sascha.

We’re dry but we lost power for 3 1/2 days and a tree limb made a hole in our dining room roof. After last year’s Irene, we had a generator installed, so the loss of power wasn’t a problem. The roof has a temporary patch, which the roofer will fix permanently in due course.
Amid all this, I kept thinking how fortunate that the storm didn’t occur during ABT’s fall season because I would have had no way of getting into the city. I was also glad that the members of ABT were out of New York when this occurred. But then I worried about what they’d find upon return to their homes.
I was also reflecting on ABT’s new firm policy that there will be NO exchanges of tickets due to weather conditions. ABT says it WILL PERFORM AS SCHEDULED, NO MATTER THE WEATHER, and if you can’t make it to the performance, tough on you. They put this policy in writing after the December Nutcracker snowstorm created blizzard conditions and many people wanted to exchange their tickets. Instead of making the exchanges requested, ABT had empty seats at BAM.

One more reason to hold donations hostage….
My hope is that while certain dancers were stuck out of the country due to the storm, they used it as a good opportunity to travel around and audition for companies that would appreciate them more.
