The inimitable Cynthia Gregory, America's own greatest 20th Century Odette/Odile, is staging Act II of Swan Lake for Nevada Ballet Theatre where she is the Artistic Coach. The company's performances on November 1st and 2nd will be at the new Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas.
Cynthia Gregory led the first Swan Lake that little Haglund ever saw back in the 1960s. And while memory can't recall who Siegfried was (probably Gayle Young or Royes Fernandez), the image of this statuesque trembling Odette, arms crossed to protect herself, will forever be burned into Haglund's memory. And what hiss & spit her Odile threw!
Here is Part 2 of a three-part behind-the-scenes promo video about the upcoming performances. The obvious question in all of this is why America's greatest 20th Century Odette/Odile is not sitting on a chair in front of the mirror in rehearsals at ABT, supposedly America's national ballet company.
